The Dearborn Symphony welcomed its 49th season Oct. 1 with a Midas touch.
Music Director Kypros Markou’s golden baton shone brightly on the Ford Community & Performing Arts stage, as did guest artist Karl Pituch on French horn.
The program opened with Gioacchino Rossini’s Overture to “Semiramide.” The overture was a change from Rossini’s usual light-hearted playful style. “Semiramide,” was born from a 1748 Voltaire tragedy that brimmed with illicit love, assassination and retribution.
Pituch’s gold tones were flawlessly delivered throughout the next piece, Giovanni Punto’s “Horn Concerto No. 5.” Pituch played Rossini’s “Hunting Fanfare” as an encore.
The night’s performance closed with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7.” Beethoven referred to the piece as “one of the happiest products of my poor talents.”
The night’s scores reminded listeners that the great masters understood the timeless scope human emotions.
Symphony president Sandy Butler announced that this year’s concert season has been dedicated to the memory of Leonard and Mary Zudick, longtime supporters of Dearborn’s musical arts.
Mark your calendar for November 12, as Kypros Markou returns to the podium with featured pianist Ivana Vidovic to highlight the music of Dvorak, Mozart Turina and Brahms in “Passion and Beauty!” Tickets range from $10 to $30.
