HEIGHTS — Mayor Daniel Paletko proclaimed April 29 through May 3 White Cane week at an April 14 ceremony at City Hall that was attended by club members Don Rivard and Dick Fetzer.
White Cane week is observed by Lions Clubs around the world to call attention to the use of the white cane by the visually impaired and to raise money to support the many services the club provides for the visually and hearing impaired.
Members of the Dearborn Heights Lions Club will be accepting donations at the intersection of Ford and Telegraph roads, as well as at several area businesses, throughout the week. The Lions donate 100 percent of the money collected to organizations that aid the visually and hearing impaired as well as other community projects.
Last year the club donated more than $10,000 to organizations that included Leader Dogs for the Blind, the Michigan Eye Bank and Transplantation Center, and Penrickton Center for Blind and Handicapped Children, as well as other local organizations, including the Dearborn Heights Spirit Festival. The club also provides eyeglasses for visually impaired children and adults who could not otherwise pay for them.
The Dearborn Heights club, which has been in existence since 1962, meets for lunch at 12:15 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Leon’s Restaurant 23830 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. People interested in joining are invited to attend the meetings.
The club is sponsoring its annual golf outing June 24 at Fellows Creek Golf Course in Canton Township. Ticket prices are $90 per player which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch and a full dinner and prizes. Anyone interested in playing or sponsoring a hole should contact Don Rivard at (313) 565-3411 or the club at (313) 295-9551.
