HFCC’s Fifty-One O One to reopen Sept. 21

September 17, 2011 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

DEARBORN – Henry Ford Community College’s Fifty-One O One Restaurant will open for the fall semester at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Fifty-One O One, in the Student and Culinary Arts Center, is an integral part of HFCC’s Hospitality Studies Program. It is completely run by students who will enter the workforce as hotel and restaurant managers, chefs, dining room personnel and other positions in the food services industry.

The students are assigned and rotated throughout the various stations in the kitchen and dining room. All menu items – specialty salads, sandwiches, entrees, daily specials and desserts – are prepared in various Culinary Arts classes.

The restaurant is open for lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. It is open for dinner from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Reservations are not required but are highly recommended, especially for dinner.

To make reservations or for further information about Fifty-One O One, call (313) 206-5101 or go to www.5101.hfcc.edu.

“The Culinary Arts Program at the college is a cutting-edge program said Cathi Duling, an instructional technician in the program. “It has excellent instructors who teach real-life skills to students.”

HFCC’s Culinary Arts Program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation as an exemplary program and has a seven-year certification through the ACF, the longest run of any of the ACF’s certifications.

A variety of different cuisines will be offered every week this semester, giving students the opportunity to broaden their horizons, not to mention their taste buds. Each week will be divided into the following themes:

• Sept. 21: Southern Italian;

• Sept. 26: Premium Steak House;

• Oct. 3: Game & Cuisine of the Midwest;

• Oct. 10: Cuisine of Germany, Hungary, Austria;

• Oct. 17: A Taste of Greek Town;

• Oct. 24: French;

• Oct. 31: Polish Heritage;

• Nov. 7: Northern Italian;

• Nov. 14: French;

• Nov. 21: Cuisine of New England;

• Nov. 28: Cuisine of the Pacific Northwest.

Additionally, Fifty-One O One will host three special events this fall:

• Oct. 12: Oktoberfest Buffet;

• Oct. 27: Culinary Arts Scholarship Fundraiser/Wild Game Dinner;

• Nov. 16: Holiday Buffet.

Duling said the Oct. 27 fundraiser will cost $45 per ticket, with $30 from each ticket going to the Culinary Arts Program. The $30 is tax deductible. A cash bar offering beer and wine will be available.
