DEARBORN – Fairlane Town Center is taking steps to encourage children to lead a healthy life.
Since 2007, Fairlane has been hosting an annual Kids N Kicks Summer Walking Program. During this program, children will walk around the mall’s common areas using the stairs and the ramps.
Fairlane General Manager Catherine O’Malley and the marketing team started the program because they wanted to have a fun, engaging health awareness program for kids that also include the whole family. The group then presented it to Blue Cross Blue Shield who decided to sponsor the event.
“We wanted the program to be measurable, fun, engage the family members and friends,” O’Malley said. “We also wanted it to be somewhat competitive for them and rewarding. We knew we wanted to reward the kids for their commitment, during and at the end of the 10-week program.”
The program has 726 children walking this summer for the 10-week program. In the end, the child with the most miles walked will win a surprise reward and all participating children will get to participate in a party.
