Rain barrels for sale

The Dearborn Heights Watershed Stewards Commission on Sept. 15 hosted a rain barrel sale and tour of the newly installed pervious pavement parking lot and gardens at the Richard A. Young Recreation Center, 5400 McKinley St. Watershed Commissioner Steve Ray said the parking lot has a 12-inch-thick gravel base that does a better job of directing the flow of water that enters the groundwater system instead of heading into the Ecorse Creek from a storm drain. Several new gardens in front and behind the recreation center catch water that drains from the building’s roof. Dearborn Heights resident Charlette Gelderloos (left) listens to Dearborn Heights Engineer Dan Brooks who tells her how to operate her newly purchased rain barrel.
