November 25, 2012 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

LINCOLN PARK – Wright & Filippis will host a Health Check open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at its Lincoln Park store, 4050 Fort St.

This event — held in conjunction with National COPD Awareness Month — is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a disease of the lungs and prevents the lungs from working properly. A person with COPD has trouble breathing and may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath upon exertion, coughing, and reoccurring lung infections. COPD also may be called by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

The Health Check will provide free spirometry screenings and pulse oximetry checks by certified staff members of the Wright & Filippis Respiratory Care Department. The results will be recorded on a card that participants can take with them and present to their primary care physician.

Certified respiratory therapists will be on hand to answer questions for patients and their family members.

“We recognize the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, and this event will help provide good information to any-one who may have concerns or questions about lung disease,” said Dana Earle, who heads the company’s Respiratory Care Department.

As part of its COPD Awareness Month observance, Wright & Filippis is offering a 20 percent discount on a variety of home medical products at each of the company’s 36 stores. These products include blood pressure kits, bed wedges, pulse oximeters and pedal exercisers. Also, the company is offering a 10 percent discount on Oxus portable oxygen concentrators through its online store, www.Home-MedicalPlus.com.

The instore and on-line specials will be available through Saturday.

Wright & Filippis is a Michigan-based healthcare company specializing in prosthetics, orthotics, respiratory care services, and home medical equipment and supplies. Founded in 1944, Wright & Filippis is the state’s largest full-service home healthcare provider.
