DEARBORN — Andres Saavedra, who attended Henry Ford Community College’s Interior Design program in 2012, recently received a $1,500 scholarship as part of the national student design competition sponsored by the National Kitchen & Bath Association.
Saavedra, of Lincoln Park, won placed second in the kitchen design category, earned this recognition as a student at HFCC.
HFCC is one of two schools in the state offering an NKBA supported or accredited kitchen and bath design program.
In April, NKBA will provide Saavedra complimentary air travel and two-night hotel accommodations in New Orleans. He will receive his award and scholarship at an awards dinner honoring student winners at the NKBA’s annual Kitchen/Bath Industry Show conference. The NKBA also will feature Saavedra’s design in the organization’s quarterly magazine.
Currently, Saavedra attends the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, where he is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Interior Design. His anticipated graduation is 2015.
“It was clear to me early on that Andres had a talent for interior design,” said Karen Wilmering, program coordinator and instructor of HFCC’s interior design program. “But talent alone is not enough to succeed in this industry. As evidenced by this exceptional achievement in placing second in a national student kitchen design competition, Andres is one of those unique individuals who has it all: talent, a strong work ethic and self-discipline.”
