DEARBORN — The Detroit man arrested for robbing Dollar General, 7630 Wyoming Ave., last summer has been sentenced to spend the next 10 to 30 years in prison for the crime.

Donald Johnson, 53, received the sentence from Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Morrow Feb. 19.

Johnson pled guilty during a pretrial hearing before Morrow Jan. 28.

The robbery occurred July 21, 2013, when Johnson, dressed in female scrubs and wearing a wig and sunglasses, entered the store and approached the cashier with a candy bar.

Johnson told the cashier to ring up the candy bar and “put the money in a bag” while reaching into a purse and said, “Hurry up or I’ll start shooting everyone in this place.”

The cashier filled a bag with money and handed it to Johnson, who then ran out the front door of the store.

Two Dearborn police officers were in the area and observed Johnson running north on Wyoming. They pursued and arrested Johnson, who said, “How did you guys get here so fast? You got me. You got me.”

The money and candy bar were recovered and the officers determined that Johnson didn’t have a weapon but rather implied he was armed.

Police Chief Ronald Haddad commended the officers for being in the right spot and acting quickly.

“The Dearborn Police Department has a zero tolerance approach to dealing with crimes of this nature and because of the diligent work of the Dearborn police officers a hardened criminal will be off the streets for a long time,” Haddad said.
