Heights man arrested for OWI
A 51-year-old Dearborn Heights resident was arrested for operating while under the influence following a traffic stop near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Michigan Avenue at 2 a.m. April 5.
An officer on patrol in the area of Telegraph and Oxford observed a tan GMC pickup truck traveling north on Telegraph at a speed estimated at over 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. The vehicle was swerving over the traffic lines on both the left and right sides of the lane and driving erratically.
The officer pulled behind the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. After approaching the truck and making contact with the driver, the officer reported smelling a strong odor of intoxicants. The driver also had red eyes and spoke slowly with slurred speech.
The man was asked to step out of the vehicle and was given several field sobriety tests, which he failed.
He admitted that he had consumed a “couple” alcoholic beverages when asked by the officer. The man then agreed to submit to a check of his blood alcohol content, which registered at .16 percent, twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Michigan.
The man was arrested, handcuffed, searched and secured in the patrol vehicle before being transported to the police department.
At the department the man was given two more blood alcohol tests and registered .19 percent at 2:44 a.m. and 2:47 a.m.
The truck was towed from the scene and impounded.
Items stolen from hotel
A manager at Red Roof Inn, 24130 Michigan Ave., called police at 11:20 a.m. April 2 after being informed that a 37-inch television and a comforter had been stolen from a room at the hotel.
The manager told police a man had entered the lobby of the hotel about 3:15 a.m. and checked into a room for the night. At 11 a.m. a housekeeper entered the room to clean it and discovered that the items were missing.
The manager was able to provide police with a copy of the man’s driver’s license number and check-in information.
The incident is under investigation.

Vehicle theft attempted
Police were dispatched at noon April 3 to investigate the attempted theft of a vehicle from an apartment complex parking lot in the 16600 block of West Outer Drive.
The victim told police she parked her blue 1997 Dodge Caravan in the lot about 4 p.m. the previous afternoon and upon returning in the morning discovered that someone had entered it and tried to steal it.
She said the interior of the vehicle had been ransacked and that there was extensive damage to the steering column where someone had tried to manipulate it. She said the power locks of the vehicle were not functioning so it had been left unlocked.
Officers checked the surrounding area but did not find anything of evidentiary value.
Items stolen from vehicle
A woman called police just before 9:30 a.m. April 2 to report that items had been stolen from her vehicle in the 4000 block of Campbell.
The victim said she parked her 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier in front of her residence at 10 p.m. the previous night and was getting to ready to leave for work when she discovered the theft. Items taken included several pieces of baby and toddler clothing and a car stereo.
The woman told police the vehicle had not been locked and that she did not hear or see anything suspicious overnight.
No suspect information was available.
Lincoln Park
Burglars strike probate-held house
The belongings of a man who recently died in a motorcycle crash were reported stolen from a house in the 1500 block of Pingree.
Police responded at 10:30 a.m. April 6 to reports of a break-in after the late homeowner’s brother had been alerted via Facebook that two men were seen leaving the house. The man told police that his brother had died a month earlier after a motorcycle crash, and that no one had been inside the home since. The house and belongings were being held up in probate court for disbursement.
Missing items included a Playstation 3 video game system, assorted jewelry valued at $2,000, DVDs, sports jerseys, shows and other valuables.
Investigators noticed a broken window covered by plywood, and pry marks near a door lock believed to be the entry point.
A neighbor described the suspects as two white men, medium build with dark clothing and hats They were last seen carrying duffel bags from the home.
Police collected evidence, including fingerprints, and are investigating.
Southgate
Electronics stolen from truck
A visiting businessman told police that more than $2,300 worth of electronics were stolen from his vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel.
Police responded to La Quinta Inn, 12888 Reeck Road, shortly after 8 p.m. April 2. A man said he’d parked his 2011 Ford F-150 about 6 p.m., and two hours later discovered the theft of a $1,500 WireScope cable tester, a Dell laptop computer and other items.
The man told police he wasn’t certain whether he locked the vehicle.
Investigators checked with hotel staff but were unable to locate any surveillance images.
Car vandalized during movie
A man told police someone smashed his vehicle’s window and stole more than $1,000 worth of items while he was watching a movie.
Police responded to the parking lot of MJR Theater, 15651 Trenton Road, at 1:20 p.m. April 5. The owner of a 2008 Ford Fusion told investigators he had locked the vehicle at 10:30 a.m., and when he returned found the driver’s side window had been smashed. Missing items included a $500 Pioneer stereo, iPod and a radar detector.
Police checked with theater management for surveillance video images and are investigating.
Trenton
Burglars take TVs, jewelry
A woman returned to her home in the 2300 block of Pinetree after a three-hour absence to discover the theft of two televisions and a several gold rings.
Police responded to the call shortly after 11 a.m. Monday. The homeowner said she’d left home about 8:15 a.m. and had secured a sliding glass door with a plywood board. The woman said the home was being remodeled.
Missing items included a 65-inch Samsung television and a 47-inch flat-screen television. Also missing was a lock-box in which she kept two ring sets.
Investigators indicated that someone may have pushed the board away from the door. Police checked for evidence and are investigating.
