HEIGHTS — Daylon Wooten, 16, of Dearborn Heights was charged with the shooting death of James Newman, 17, of Inkster following a fight on Feb. 28.
The Wayne County Prosector’s Office announced the second-degree murder, possession of a stolen firearm, concealed weapon and felony firearm charges on March 6.
If convicted, a Wayne County Circuit Court judge from the Juvenile Division will decide if Wooten is charged as an adult, juvenile or combination of the two at the time of sentencing.
The shooting took place in the 24700 block of Lehigh Street about 1:40 a.m. when police responded to a 911 call on a report of a male who sustained a gunshot injury.
Wooten and Newman had handguns when the 16-year-old shot the 17-year-old, according to the police as reported by the Detroit News.
First responders arrived at the scene in the area of Beech Daly Road and Annapolis and determined Wooten had non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being released.
According to a Dearborn Heights police press release, officers were notified of a second male, Newman who was Beaumont Hospital-Wayne for treatment of gunshot injuries as a result of a shooting. Two men at the scene transported Newman to the hospital, the Detroit News reported.
