Swimming lessons offered in January

Registration under way at Ford Center

DEARBORN – Registration is under way for the Dearborn Recreation & Parks Department’s indoor swimming lesson program for children, “Learn to Swim,” at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, with classes beginning on Jan. 4, 6 or 7.

Learn to Swim features nine levels of instruction.

Parent and Tot (ages six months to 3 years): Parent must accompany the child into the water.

Tadpoles (ages 3 to 5): Basic water and safety skills.

Sea Shells (Beginner and ages 6 and above): Floating, submerging, breath-holding.

Sea Horses (Beginner): Crawl stroke, using a kickboard, jumping into the water.

Sunfish: Development of crawl stroke, with an emphasis on kicking, breathing and arm stroke technique.

Sting Rays (Intermediate Beginner): Improve crawl stroke, backstroke, deep water.

Barracudas (Advanced Beginner): Improve crawl stroke and backstroke, diving, safety, swimming 25 yards.

Dolphins (Intermediate): Elementary backstroke and breaststroke and underwater swimming.

Seals (Intermediate): Sidestroke, starts and turns, distance swimming and backstroke.

Learn to Swim offers twice-a-week classes which meet either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday for five weeks, starting Jan. 6 or 7, respectively, and once-a-week Saturday classes which meet for 10 weeks, beginning Jan. 4. All classes are at the Ford Center, 15801 Michigan Ave.

Monday/Wednesday classes feature Parent and Tot from 4 to 4:30 p.m., Tadpoles from 4 to 4:30 and 5:20 to 5:50 p.m., Seashells from 4 to 4:30, 4:40 to 5:10 and 5:20 to 5:50 p.m., Seahorses from 4:40 to 5:10 and 5:20 to 5:50 p.m., and Sunfish from 4:40 to 5:10 p.m.

Tuesday/Thursday classes include Seashells from 5 to 5:30 and 5:40 to 6:10 p.m., Seahorses from 5 to 5:30 and 5:40 to 6:10 p.m., Sunfish from 5 to 5:30, 5:40 to 6:10 and 6:20 to 6:50 p.m., Stingrays from 5 to 5:30 and 6:20 to 6:50 p.m., Barracudas from 5:40 to 6:10 p.m., Dolphins from 6:20 to 6:50 p.m., and Seals from 6:20 to 6:50 p.m.

Saturday classes feature Parent and Tot from 9:45 to 10:15, 10:30 to 11 and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; Tadpoles from 9 to 9:30, 10:30 to 11 and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; Seashells from 9 to 9:30, 9:45 to 10:15 and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; Seahorses from 9 to 9:30 and 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.; Sunfish from 9 to 9:30 and 10:30 to 11 a.m.; Stingrays from 9:45 to 10:15 and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; and Barracudas from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Register at the service desk of the Ford Center. Cost is $60 for passholders, $65 for residents and $80 for non-residents.
