Wyandotte Mayor Joseph Peterson was remembered at a memorial service July 23 at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery in Brownstown Township, outside the cremation columbarium where his urn is interred.

Peterson, 66, died May 17 of heart failure related to his exposure to Agent Orange while serving with the Army in Vietnam.

Contingents of veterans and police officials honored the late mayor, with a veteran playing taps, a police honor guard, and a veteran honor guard performing the three rifle volleys 21-gun salute. A bagpiper also played at the service.

Peterson served as a Wyandotte police officer prior to entering politics. He was active with many local veteran groups and non-profits.

Peterson leaves his wife, Janice; his sons, Joseph and Matthew; and his granddaughters, Shelby and Noel.
