WYANDOTTE – A former firehouse may soon have different bells and whistles, as its new owner plans to convert the building, at 2011 Oak St., into a single-family home.
The City Council at its Feb. 8 meeting, following the recommendation of the Planning Commission, approved a zoning change from Neighborhood Business District to One Family Residential District.
The purchaser, Tony McDonald, who is hoping to buy the building and property from its current owner, Francesco Mucci, indicated that a zoning change was needed to procure financing.
MacDonald said that the 3,750-square-foot former firehouse would be converted to have a living room, kitchen and dining room on the first floor, and that he would use the second floor as a sleeping area.
He also indicated that he would likely remove the parking lot to create a yard, and may build a garage on the east side of the property.
Local residents attending the Dec. 17 Planning Commission meeting expressed relief that the plan was for a single-family home, and not a hall or an apartment.
The council also concurred with the Planning Commission’s approval of the rezoning to Planned Development for both the medical center proposal at 2533 and 2557 Biddle Ave., and for the Downriver Actors Guild performing arts center proposal at the site of the former St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, at Goodell and Second Street.
