WYANDOTTE – BASF and the city will share the cost of improvements to Wye Street, a section of which BASF wants to widen to improve a semi-truck turning spot.
The council approved the proposal at its Feb. 8 meeting.
The company said that four semi-trucks per day traverse Wye Street, which is south of Wyandotte Shores Golf Course, to reach its south monitoring station, and said the existing pavement is not wide enough for semi-truck turning maneuvers, which has resulted in numerous trucks getting stuck on non-paved ground.
City Engineer Greg Mayhew proposed that BASF pay for the cost associated with the widened section, while the city repairs the existing fractured pavement slabs, which would be included in the 2021 major street resurfacing fund.
The total estimated cost is $105,000, with $62,000 to be billed to BASF, and the city paying for the remaining $43,000 cost.
Mayhew said the Department of Public Services already has been in the area trimming the trees on Wye Street, which he said were beginning to get overgrown, and would get damaged by the passing trucks.
