SOUTHGATE — A woman filing her income tax return online discovered Feb. 26 that $29,000 in unemployment benefits was paid out in her name to an identity thief.

The victim said she has been employed throughout the pandemic, and did not for unemployment benefits.

She said she has contacted the Internal Revenue Service, which flagged her Social Security number, and she notified the credit reporting agencies of the breach, as well.
