Several festival activities cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns
HEIGHTS – The city’s annual Spirit Fest, typically held each June, will see a significant reduction in its scope this year due to COVID-19-related concerns.
Only the Senior Jubilee — a regular Spirit Fest event — will be held this year, on June 9 at the Canfield Community Center, 1801 N. Beech Daly Road.
“I am disappointed we will be unable to continue the tradition of our week-long festival this year” Mayor Bill Bazzi said. “But out of concern for the safety of all involved, we have decided to make a significant number of cuts in this year’s program.
“While many of the activities typically take place outdoors, with the number of individuals who participate at any given time, there is simply no way we could ensure proper social distancing or enforce a mask mandate.
“We are confident we can run (the Senior Jubilee) safely since it is not only an outdoor event, but it sees a comparatively smaller number of participants, so we can effectively maintain the proper social distancing and easily oversee the facemask requirement.”
The Senior Jubilee offers Heights seniors all-outdoor entertainment, lunch, vendor booths and give-aways, and bingo for $5 per person. Tickets may be purchased either at the Eton or Berwyn senior centers. Courtesy buses will transport seniors between the senior centers and the Canfield Center.
“We welcome any and all seniors to join us for a great time” Bazzi said. “We will make sure all the COVID-related precautions and protocols will be in place and followed closely to ensure everyone has a great and safe time.”
Additional information regarding the event will be available on the city’s website and Facebook page as the event draws closer
