DEARBORN — The Rotary Club of Dearborn recently awarded scholarships totaling more than $50,000 to 17 graduating high school seniors in Dearborn, two Henry Ford College nursing students and a military veteran attending the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Scholarships awarded to high school seniors are in four, merit-based categories. Each award category is endowed by or honors a past Dearborn Rotarian, who recognized the importance of education and sought to pay their own success forward by helping outstanding youth with college expenses.

Award amounts range from $8,500 to $2,000 to be used for tuition, books and class fees. In the case of the Rowen Scholarship, the award can be used for expenses related to their vocational pursuit.

Reda Mazeh of Fordson High School was awarded the Harry A. Sisson Scholarship of $8,500. Mazeh shared that his passion lies in supporting diversity and inclusion through student and community activities. Organizer of an anti-bullying rally and a Diversity Committee leader, Mazeh traveled to the Dominican Republic with the Fordson Interact Club where he worked to rebuild shelters in a refugee camp while assisting students with necessities.

Adam Allouch of Dearborn High School and Lena Elkoussy of Fordson High School are winners of the Hugh M. Archer Scholarship, established in the memory of the longtime Dearborn resident and Rotarian. In addition to founding the Spiratex Corp. and many professional achievements, Archer served as president of the Rotary Club of Dearborn, Rotary District Governor, International Director, International General Secretary and International President in 1989-90.

The Past Presidents Scholarship was largely funded by former Edsel Ford High School principal and Dearborn Rotary Past President Robert Young, and is awarded to four Dearborn Public School graduating seniors who will attend a Michigan college or university. This year’s scholarship recipients are Maya Beydoun and Grace Boettger of Dearborn High School, Luke Hetrick of Edsel Ford High School, and Maryam Shafie Khorassani of Fordson High School.

The largest scholarship category is the Otto Rowen Vocational Scholarships honoring the memory of former Rotarian, teacher and principal in Dearborn Public Schools. He established the trust fund that is administered by the Dearborn Rotary Foundation to provide scholarships for DPS seniors who are the best representatives in their vocational areas as recommended by their instructors.

The 10 winners of this year’s Rowen Vocational scholarships are Badr Algamal, Saif Alheresh, and Zeshan Arshad of Edsel Ford High School; Belal Dabaja, Khalid Esmail and Ali Kassem of Fordson High School; Dania Jadallah and Olivia Thibodeaux of Dearborn High School; and Mohammad Lakhani and Steven Rios of Henry Ford Early College.

Nearly 20 years ago, Dearborn Rotary established the Henry Ford College Nursing Scholarship in conjunction with the Henry Ford College Foundation. This year, scholarships were awarded to Angela Fisher and Karmyn Long. Following graduation from HFC, both plan to attend Eastern Michigan University to become registered nurses.

The Archer Veterans Scholarship at UM-D was made possible by an endowment funded by the Archer family, Dearborn Rotary Foundation, and Spiratex Corp. Keivin Colbert, who served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed to Afghanistan, is recipient of this year’s scholarship. A sophomore majoring in business, Colbert is active in the Student Veteran Association and other veteran organizations.

Three years ago, funds from the Archer Veterans scholarship were also made available to qualifying participants in the 19th District Veterans Court, a program designed to help veterans in need of mental health or substance abuse treatment and other services. The Archer funds help veterans further their education as they become contributing members of the community.

Colleen Nieman, 2020-21 club president, credits Scholarship Chairman Lee Hollmann and Board Vocational Director David Anderson as well as individual scholarship chairpersons with coordinating and reviewing the scholarship applications.

“They didn’t miss a beat, given the need to adjust schedules and communications channels during the pandemic,” Nieman said.

Scholarship awarded to the students are a highlight of the year for Dearborn Rotarians Nieman said.

Founded in 1923, the Rotary Club of Dearborn (www.DearbornRotary.org) is the city’s oldest service organization and is a member of Rotary International bringing 1.2 million members in over 34,000 individual clubs together to live the motto of “Service Above Self.”
