MELVINDALE — A man who tried unsuccessfully to break into two cars in the 18800 block of Reed Street fled on foot after setting off a car alarm, cutting through the nearby Melvindale High School baseball field.

A gray 2019 Ford Fusion had scratch marks on the front and rear driver’s side doors, consistent with an attempt to gain entry by prying open the doors.

The man then triggered the car alarm of a silver 2009 Dodge Charger across the street, which was found to have a cracked front windshield, which may have resulted from a rock thrown at the car.

Footage of the vandal was captured by the victim’s surveillance camera, which he agreed to forward to the police detective bureau.
