ALLEN PARK – Ali Chehade, 22, of Dearborn was arraigned in 24th District Court May 27 on one count third-degree animal killing, after violently killing a parakeet inside a local store.
On May 18, Chehade allegedly tried to return the visibly injured bird to Critters Pet Shop, 19309 Ecorse Road, for a full refund, but was offered a store credit instead.
Store surveillance footage shows the man reacting with rage, smashing the box containing the bird with his fist, and then his foot, killing the bird, before leaving the store.
Police were called to the location, and were able to retrieve the man’s license plate number from the store’s surveillance feed.
Following Chehade’s arraignment, he was given a $50,000, 10 percent bond, and was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation. He is also forbidden to have any pets in his home.
Chehade’s probable cause conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 7, followed by a 10 a.m. June 14 preliminary examination of the evidence against him.
