U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-12th District) announced Aug. 10 that the Dearborn Fire Department will receive a $350,375 regional grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. She also announced that the Dearborn Heights Fire Department will receive $154,545.

The Dearborn and Dearborn Heights fire departments will receive regional grants through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program totaling $505,000, U.S. Rep Debbie Dingell (D-12th District) announced.

The Dearborn Fire Department will receive $350,375. The funding will will be used to provide firefighters with improved National Fire Protection Association compliant tools and equipment as well as new state of the art training programs.

The Dearborn Heights Fire Department will receive $154,545. The funding will be used to purchase a source capture exhaust system for the department.

“This grant will help ensure the safety of our firefighters and our citizens by funding new state of the art training and equipment for the Dearborn Fire Department,” Fire Chief Joseph Murray said. “We are grateful for Congresswoman Dingell’s support in protecting our community.”

“In these challenging economic times, grant funding has been a way for our department to secure critical items that would have otherwise been difficult, if not impossible, to obtain,” Dearborn Heights Fire Chief Dave Brogan said. “This grant will be used to purchase a source capture exhaust system, which is part of our firefighter safety and wellness program, to capture truck exhaust and vent it out of the station, keeping the building clean and our firefighters safe.”

“Our firefighters and first responders put their lives on the line every single day to keep our communities safe,” Dingell said. “This critical funding will ensure that they are well equipped to protect Michigan families and stay safe while on the job.”

The AFG program awards grants directly to fire departments and EMS organizations that are unaffiliated with a hospital to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards.
