SOUTHGATE – The city’s transportation program, which benefits seniors and people with disabilities, continues to expand its services with funding from the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation.
SMART, which serves Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, will provide $77,548 for Southgate’s 2022 fiscal year, through its Municipal and Community Credits program.
City Administrator Dustin Lent said the service is available to seniors 55 years and older, and people with disabilities, with pickup in Southgate and service throughout the Downriver area.
“It helps us transport our Southgate seniors to doctor appointments, shopping centers and senior living facilities,” he said. “We have two buses, and one van, and all three of them do have lifts.”
Lent said the program is run through the Southgate senior center, and has a nominal $1 charge one-way per seven miles of travel.
The service is available 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday, providing an estimated 400 hours of ride services each month.
