MELVINDALE — A 32-year-old Ypsilanti woman was charged with operating while under the influence of alcohol at 12:14 a.m. Aug. 14, after she crashed her Pontiac G6 into a road sign and ended up on the curb, facing oncoming traffic, on Greenfield Road near Allen Road.

Her driving privileges were suspended for her refusal to submit to subsequent breath tests, and an additional six points were added to her driving record.

When police officers arrived at the scene of the crash, the driver and passenger, a 31-year-old Detroit woman, declined medical treatment. Police officers noted the smell of intoxicants in the car.

The driver, whose speech was slurred, was unsteady on her feet, and failed multiple field sobriety tests.

A preliminary breath test was administered, and the woman had a blood-alcohol content of 0.26, more than three times the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.

The driver was then handcuffed, searched and taken to the Dearborn police station, and her vehicle was impounded.

At the police station, the woman refused to follow directions to complete further breath tests, and she was placed in a holding cell while a search warrant was sought for a blood draw.

While in the cell, the woman became erratic, slamming her head into the door and walls, yelling and screaming, and crawling around the cell.

Dearborn emergency medical technicians were summoned to take her to Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn, where a blood draw was completed and she was admitted for medical treatment.
