ALLEN PARK — A man driving the wrong way on the Southfield service drive Aug. 13 was arrested for drunken driving.

Officers observed a gray Cadillac XT6 traveling north on south M-39 and then north onto the southbound Oakwood ramp. Officers activated their overhead lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The Cadillac then turned east onto Oakwood, then proceeded through the red light to go north onto the Southfield service drive before pulling over on the service drive just north of Oakwood.

Police made contact with the driver and advised him about the reason for the stop. When asked for his driver’s license, the man began to count his cash from his wallet and then attempted to hand the officer his cash. Then, again police asked him for his drivers license which he was able to provide.

While speaking with the man, the officer could smell alcohol on the man’s breath. When asked how much he has had to drink, he stated “just a little bit.” Police asked the man to clarify what he meant by “a little.” He stated he had one beer several hours ago then asked me why the officer had stopped him.

He was advised that he was traveling the wrong direction on south M-39 but the man disagreed, according to the report.

The man was asked to step out of the vehicle. Police observed the man had to use the door and vehicle to maintain his balance as he stepped out. As the man walked to the back of the vehicle to the bumper, he used the vehicle to maintain his balance. While he was standing at the back of the vehicle he was observed to be swaying back and forth.

Field sobriety tests were performed and the man’s blood-alcohol-level was .195, more than twice the .08 legal limit in Michigan. The man was arrested and cited for operating while intoxicated.
