MELVINDALE — Cash, checks and a debit card were stolen Oct. 13 from a disabled woman’s Gale Gardens apartment by the granddaughter of her close friend, who had stolen the key from her grandmother a while ago, and who may have committed the burglary with her ex-convict boyfriend.

The two women returned to the apartment the night of Oct. 13, and discovered that $1,835 in cash, a recently received order of checks and her debit card were missing. There were no signs of damage to the lock or to the door.

On Oct. 15, the granddaughter and her boyfriend attempted to fraudulently cash checks at two different locations: A $3,000 check at Zeal Credit Union in Southfield, and a $4,500 check at Access Financial in Deerfield Beach. Neither check was cashed. The victim closed her account and reported the situation to her financial institution.

The friend of the victim said her granddaughter has intellectual disabilities, and she fears that her ex-convict boyfriend may be manipulating her.
