HEIGHTS — Former Crestwood Schools Trustee Ed Garcia resigned Oct. 25 leaving a vacancy and the need for a new board member appointment by next month.

A reason for his resignation was not given during the Oct. 25 meeting when Trustee Nadia Berry made the announcement.

“I just wanted to let everyone know that Mr. Ed Garcia has officially resigned, so we wanted to thank Mr. Garcia for his service to the Crestwood children and to the district,” she said. “We wish him the best go luck in his endeavors. Thank you for everything you have done Mr. Garcia.”

Garcia served as treasurer and was first elected to the board in 2004. During his almost three-month absence, Trustee Sue Kaminsky had been conducting treasurer duties.

The district is seeking applications for the open seat with the person selected serving the remainder of Garcia’s term through Dec. 31, 2022.

Letters of interest must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Nov. 8 to the Crestwood Board of Education, 27235 Joy Road, Dearborn Heights, MI, 48127. The board also will meet to establish criteria for selection and to screen candidates. A vacant seat must be filled within 30 days from the effective date of resignation, according to the School Code of the State of Michigan.

A special board meeting will be held Nov. 15 to interview candidates, and a new board member will be appointed during the regular Nov. 22 meeting, to be held electronically beginning at 7 a.m.

Trustee Mo Sabbagh brought up the question on Garcia’s absence during an Oct. 11 meeting after quite a few people had asked him about Garcia.

Berry responded by saying that it was something out of the control of the board and it was Garcia’s choice, but she did reach out to him prior to the meeting and asked how he was doing.

She said that Garcia said he was doing better. No other details were discussed.
