SOUTHGATE — A con artist convinced a Southgate woman on Oct. 18 that her Amazon account had been compromised, and convinced her to share her driver’s license number and credit card information to facilitate a refund for an alleged fraudulent transaction.

The fraudster convinced her to download two apps to her phone, as well.

As soon as the interaction was over, the victim discovered that her credit card was used to facilitate two $50 Bitcoin transactions. Her financial institution flagged and blocked additional transactions attempts as suspicious.

She flagged her bank accounts, canceled her credit card, and deleted the phone applications. Her bank processed a credit card refund for the Bitcoin purchases.
