DEARBORN – The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Jyon Trayson Nateshun Collins in connection with the hit-and-run death Nov. 7 of a 6-year-old Dearborn Heights girl who was visiting her grandmother.

Collins, 18, of Detroit, voluntarily surrendered Nov. 10 to Dearborn police officials.

He was charged with one count of failure to stop at a scene resulting in death, a five-year felony, and driving without a license, a misdemeanor.

He was arraigned via Zoom Nov. 12 in 19th District Court before Judge Gene Hunt. Hunt set Collins’ bond at $50,000, 10 percent, house arrest upon release, and a GPS tether. He is only allowed to leave for school, work, or legal appointments.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 24, and the preliminary examination of the evidence against him is scheduled for Dec. 3 in 19th District Court before Judge Mark Somers.

Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said Collins’ surrender was a direct result of the cooperation of the media and the public.

“With the subject in custody, it’s important to note that this investigation is active and ongoing,” he said.

The girl, Batoul Haider Alfadawi, 6, was fatally struck by a sport utility vehicle, believed to be a silver or white Chevy Equinox, Nov. 7 in the 7600 block of Bingham Street in Dearborn, where she was visiting her grandmother.

Video footage shows that the girl had crossed the street to pick up a ball from behind a parked car, then darted back into the street, into the path of the vehicle which struck her.

She was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Detroit, where she died of her injuries.

Haddad said the tragedy has impacted the entire community.

“This is a tragic accident, and we offer our condolences to the family of the victim,” he said.
