SOUTHGATE — Following an unsuccessful attempt Nov. 24 by a con artist to steal her identity information, a woman filed a police report to document the attempted fraud.

The woman said an out-of-state caller identified themself as a law enforcement officer, accused her of being a suspect in multiple crimes, and tried to build credibility by stating her name, birth date and the last four digits of her Social Security number.

The caller asked her specific questions about a recent rental car agreement, and tried to get her to reveal the other digits of her Social Security number, which made her suspicious. She then hung up on the caller, and refused to answer additional calls from other out-of-state numbers.

She said she had contacted her banking institutions and was monitoring her credit reports as a precaution.
