ALLEN PARK — A resident avoided an identity theft attempt while searching for a house online for her mother to move into using Rent.com. She found a house in Wyandotte and made contact with the owner through email.

The resident provided the owner with her mother’s full name, date of birth, phone number and address along with a photo of her mother’s driver’s license.

According to the report, the resident felt the interaction was strange so she checked the property in Zillow.com and found the actual owner. When she contacted that owner, he said he did not list the property on Rent.com.

The resident did not give her mother’s Social Security number, account information or money to the imposter owner but was still concerned about identity theft.

Police advised the resident to have her mother contact a credit bureau to file fraud alert status.
