Pair arrested for stealing copper from former hospital property

December 4, 2010 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

TRENTON — Two men were arrested last Sunday after witnesses spotted their suspiciously parked Hyundai in the 2200 block of Riverside Drive.

One of the men got out about 12:30 a.m. and loaded something into the trunk before walking north on Riverside with the other man toward the vacant Riverside Hospital property. Police checked the property and and could locate only one of the men before discovering two unlocked doors on the north side of the building.

An officer waited on foot near the doors and said he heard banging inside the building. About 1:30 the two men walked out of the unlocked door above the loading docks at the north end, then to the east side of the building and toward their car.

Other officers arrived and positioned their patrol vehicles in the area. One saw two men, both white, get into the car after placing items inside the trunk. The units closed in and arrested the pair.

Two backpacks were found in the rear seat of their car. One contained two cutting tools, leather gloves and 35 pieces of copper.

Inside the trunk were 40 to 50 pieces of copper pipes, including a water supply valve, and large pieces of thick, coated copper wire and small gauge copper wire.
