HFCC cagers get season underway

Now that the scrimmage games are over, it’s time for the Henry Ford Community College men’s basketball team to swing into the regular season schedule. The hometown Hawks will again be playing their home games on campus and inside the HFCC Athletic Memorial Building.

Abe Mashhour is the head coach and has a 2011-12 roster made up of a mixture of mostly Downriver and Detroit hoop talent that have recently left the ranks of their nearby prep teams. Four freshman newcomers, two guards and two centers, from Downriver, are being counted on to assist in scoring this season. Among this quartet are guards Larry Smith (Lincoln Park) and Thomas Massey (Taylor).

At the center position, Coach Mashhour has Jason Lezotte (Woodhaven) and Dean Solomon (Gibraltar) to call on as the local cagers prepare for community college competition.

At least five Saturday afternoon games are on tap and will be played at the Dearborn facility. These tilts will be in January and February against Schoolcraft College, St. Clair CC, Macomb CC, Oakland CC and Wayne County CCD. Tip-off time for these games is 3 p.m.

Just how well the Hawks will do on the hardwoods this season is questionable. The HFCC cagers played at Lansing CC this past Saturday and the results of that contest should be a good indicator of things to come. They also have road games with Sinclair CC (Dec. 2) and Kellog CC on Dec. 3.

For those sports fans who like to watch local community college level basketball, the Hawks’ next home game is on Dec. 7, when they take on Lansing CC in a 7 p.m. tilt.
