Ron Cornell, like many before and after him, is long past his prime as an outstanding high school athlete. Now at 73, he still can recall his former days in the prep world. On Sept. 18, Charles Jestice passed away. The former varsity football head coach, was at the helm when the Tractors were so dominant throughout the state as a powerful grid machine that was highly respected at every level. Coach Jestice fielded teams in the 1970s and 1980s that were championship-plus while at Fordson High School. He had been retired for the past few years and had reached his 78th birthday. Former high school varsity players from Dearborn and Downriver are part of the Wayne State University 2013 football team. Leading the list is Andrew Matt, a 6-2, 241-pound senior defensive end. He is from Wyandotte Roosevelt and is being counted on to help anchor a strong defense when the Warriors take the field this season.
