Jazz vocalist Sheila Landis to perform at Taylor Conservatory

August 19, 2012 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

Shelia Landis
TAYLOR – The Shelia Landis Quartet will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. at Taylor Conservatory & Botanical Gardens 22314 Northline Road. Admission is $5.

Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome and encouraged, but outside food and beverages are not allowed. There will be a cash bar with food and beverage service starting at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served by Crystal Gardens.

Landis, a Detroit native, is a seven-time winner of The Outstanding Jazz Vocalist award bestowed by the Detroit Music Awards. Landis has been performing her soulful interpretations of jazz and blues in the area since 1973. In 1991 she teamed up with seven-string guitarist Rick Matle and together they continue to explore jazz ballads, bebop, blues, Brazilian rhythms, funk and their own collaborations at every performance.

The concerts have given attendees a chance to hear some of metropolitan Detroit’s finest jazz performers, and see a variety of artists’ work displayed in a setting that have impressed even the performers themselves. This week’s featured artist is Joseph Gambino.

In the event of rain, a concert would be moved indoors to the Taylor Lanes bowling center “Back Bar” at 24800 Eureka Road. A decision to move the concert would be made by 4 p.m. the day of the event. To confirm that a concert has been moved due to weather issues, call 888-383-4108.

The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Taylor Conservatory Foundation, the Taylor Cultural Arts Commission, Dolphin Manufacturing, Huron Valley Steel, Fritz Enterprises, Auto Finance Center of Ypsilanti, PNC, Walmart, Taylor Lanes and Betty and Ollie Boss.

For more information, call Erin Dobbins at 734-558-3228 or go to the Taylor Conservatory website, www.taylorconservatory.org.
