A potential tragedy was averted on Aug. 9 at Ford Woods outdoor pool in Dearborn, because of the quick actions of four city lifeguards, who acted in concert to save a 7-year-old swimmer. Brandon Smyth pulled the unconscious boy from the pool, Alex Rybka and Therese Caruana administered CPR and Nicole Williamson summoned an emergency response crew. Dearborn Mayor John O’Reilly Jr. (left) presented citations on Aug. 19 to Rybka (second from left) and Caruana for their life-saving actions. Smyth and Williamson were not available for the presentation. Joining O’Reilly were Recreation and Parks Director Greg Orner (second from right) and city Aquatics Supervisor Teddy Shaskos.
