Cause uncertain in woman’s death

TAYLOR — A 32-year-old woman died under what police are calling uncertain circumstances Wednesday, after she was found in her apartment by a family member.

Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said an investigation continued last week into the death of Stephanie Ray Buchanan. The manager of Royal Park apartments in the 7100 block of Polk Street had notified relatives when he’d been unable to reach Buchanan, and a family member entered the home about 5 p.m. Wednesday and contacted police.

“The cause of death was not immediately apparent,” Sclabassi said.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office on Thursday ruled the cause as “indeterminate.”

Homicide could not be ruled out, Sclabassi said, nor could accidental or natural causes. The medical examiner’s report indicated no signs of strangulation; toxicology results remained pending.

It was uncertain how long the woman had gone undiscovered, and it remained unconfirmed whether one or more others had been in the apartment during that time.
