DEARBORN — The mother of former state Rep. George Darany (D-15th District), Ethel Darany, passed away on Sept. 28 after a brief illness.
She was born in Shinnston, W.Va., on Dec. 8, 1923, and had been a Dearborn resident for the past 58 years.
The 93-year-old Dearborn resident was known as “Babe” or “Aunt Babe” by her friends and family.
“She loved singing songs from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. She also enjoyed playing cards, cooking and being a homemaker,” the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home legacy page read. “She had an artist eye and recognized the beauty in all things. Most important to Ethel was the time she shared with her loving family. She was a devout Catholic and prayed everyday.”
She was the daughter of the late Isaac and Barbara Joseph.
She leaves her children, Theresa (David) Smith and George, and had over 50 nieces and nephews and over 100 grand nieces and nephews.
“She taught me so much about how to be caring, compassionate and patient,” George Darany said. “My mother helped me become a better person and state representative. Anything good I have done came from her.”
The family will receive friends at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home 22546 Michigan Ave. from 1 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 6. A mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 7 at St. Kateri Tekawitha Catholic Church, 16101 Rotunda Drive. The procession will follow to St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn, Heights.
