TRENTON — The target of a phone scam spoke to police after receiving a confirmation email from Microsoft for a subscription renewal June 14.

According to the report, the price of the renewal was $259. The resident said he was unsure what the subscription was so the next day he called the support help desk that was given in the email. He was told to call another phone number.

When the resident called, the man on the phone never gave his name, but demanded that the resident provide his home computer login so he could fix a potential virus. The resident provided the login for his HP computer and then noticed money from his bank account was being withdrawn.

While on the phone, the man demanded the resident meet him at Walmart. That is when the resident became suspicious and called police.

The resident already was on the phone with his bank which told him no money was actually lost, but instead was transferred to another checking account. He said an appointment with the bank was being set up for the next day and police will be contacted if any money was lost during the scam.
