WYANDOTTE — A 48-year-old Wyandotte man who said he had hit a trash bin with his car the night of Nov. 23, subsequently had his vehicle break down on the railroad tracks, where it was hit by a passing train before it could be towed off the tracks.

Despite police officers’ attempts to stop rail traffic, Downriver Central Dispatch was unable to reach an approaching train in time, and it struck the rear of the vehicle, clearing it from the tracks. What was left of the vehicle was impounded and towed.

The driver, who smelled of intoxicants, had watery eyes and slurred speech. A preliminary breath test was administered, and the man had a blood alcohol content of 0.18, more than twice the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.

He consented to a blood draw, which was done at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. Afterward, he was taken to the police station, where he was booked and held.
