WYANDOTTE —A 60-year-old Ecorse man was arrested at 2:25 a.m. Dec. 31 for multiple incidents of larceny from an auto, thanks to an observant resident in the 600 block of 8th Street, who alerted police officers to the crime in progress.
When arrested, the man had electronics, jewelry and cash in his possession, as well as a crack pipe and a steak knife.
The suspect also had a previous felony warrant for theft in the city of Wyandotte.
Deputy Police Chief Archie Hamilton said it appears that the man was entering unlocked vehicles and stealing fencible items, which he said is a common crime.
“We strongly recommend that people lock their cars and try not to leave valuables inside, when possible,” he said. “The simple fact is that most thieves will not smash windows in order to gain entry into a vehicle.”
Hamilton said thieves will tug on a door handle, and if a vehicle is locked, they will move on to an easier target.
