WYANDOTTE — A drug-addicted shoplifter was arrested by a police officer at 12:10 a.m. Feb. 1 after he saw a man fleeing on a bicycle through the parking lot at CVS Pharmacy, 2025 Fort St.

The man was glancing behind him, and crossed Ford Avenue without heeding traffic, and narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle.

When the officer stopped him for questioning, he found $26 worth of medicated soap hidden under the man’s jacket.

The officer then checked with CVS personnel, who confirmed that the items were stolen.

The man then admitted to being addicted to heroin and crack cocaine, and said that he supported his drug habit by exchanging stolen merchandise for drugs. He was wanted on several warrants, including motor vehicle theft.

Deputy Police Chief Archie Hamilton said drug dependent people often steal easily bartered items to support their addiction, and they are not taking basic items for personal use that they cannot afford.
