ALLEN PARK — A drunken driver who claimed he “hit the wall” near the northbound Southfield Freeway and the I-94 freeway was arrested June 26 for operating while impaired and for not having proof of insurance.

The man, who smelled strongly of intoxicants, had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and a glassy stare. He initially handed the police officer his health insurance card instead of his driver’s license, and admitted to drinking earlier.

He failed multiple standard field sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test was administered, and the man had a blood-alcohol content of 0.217, almost three times the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.

The vehicle, a black 2015 Ford Escape with heavy front-end damage, was impounded and towed, while he was taken to the Allen Park Police Department, where he was booked and held.
