HEIGHTS — Squatters in a house under renovation in the 7700 block of Grayfield Street punched holes in newly painted drywall and snapped off a kitchen faucet March 2 after the legal owner changed the locks on the residence after discovering trash and air mattresses inside the house.

The victim, a 54-year-old Ann Arbor man, said he has had ongoing issues with squatters breaking into the house during the renovation process, during which it should have been vacant.

He said some of the squatters went so far as to change the door locks. He was advised to install deadbolt locks on the door to try to discourage future break-ins.
