SOUTHGATE — A telephone scam artist claiming to be a manager was calling individual guests on their room phones at the Hampton Inn, 13555 Prechter Blvd., the night of Jan. 18 in an attempt to get them to send a $200 room deposit fee using a cash app.

An actual employee of the hotel, who notified the police after receiving numerous complaints, said the fraudster shouldn’t be able to bypass the front desk to reach the individual room phones.

At this time, the complainant was unaware of any guests who had lost money via the attempted scam. The phone number being used to place the calls was linked to a Southgate address.
