RIVERVIEW — A 22-year-old woman who was driving north on southbound Fort Street the afternoon of May 29 was subject to a traffic stop, during which she was found to be in the country illegally.

The woman, who did not speak English, communicated with the police officer through a cell phone language translation application.

Her car, which was not insured, failed to start after the traffic stop, and was impounded and towed. She did not have a driver’s license.

The woman was taken to the Riverview police station, where a Border Patrol officer who spoke her language communicated with her and verified the woman’s identity. The woman said she was awaiting a court hearing for political asylum.
