MELVINDALE – The City Council moved to place former Mayor Wheeler Marsee in the council seat vacated by Julie Rauser’s recent resignation, a move which Mayor Nicole Shkira plans to veto.
The motion, at the Nov. 20 meeting, passed by a 3-0 vote, with Councilmembers Joe Jackson, Dawn Cartrette and Stan Filipowski in favor, and Councilmember Scott Frederick abstaining. Councilmember Saleim Abuali was not present at the meeting.
On Nov. 26, Shkira reportedly initiated the paperwork to veto the motion at the Dec. 4 council meeting.
The City Council can override her veto with four votes, which would require either Abuali or Frederick vote to override the veto, assuming Jackson, Cartrette and Filipowski maintain their support for Marsee.
Shkira, who missed her own window of opportunity as allowed by the city charter to nominate a candidate to fill the empty seat, declined to comment on her intended veto, and rebuffed future enquiries from the media.
