Squirrel nest may have caused vehicle fire

SOUTHGATE — A fire that completely engulfed a white 2019 Chevy vehicle Dec. 12 in the 15000 block of Cynthia Street may have had a squirrel’s nest under the hood serve as its combustion source.

A police officer who spoke to the vehicle owner discovered that the driver was dropping off some items at a friend’s home, and when she went to leave, she discovered smoke and flames emanating from the engine compartment.

The driver said a mechanic had once removed a squirrel’s nest from the vehicle’s engine compartment, so it was possible that another nest had been built and provided tinder for the destructive blaze.
