DEARBORN – The American Association of University Woman – Dearborn Chapter celebrated March Literacy Month by populating a new free little library at Black Box Coffee and Art, 1034 Monroe St.

The shelf full of books set up by the local group, known for its annual fundraising book sales, bears a sign encouraging patrons to select a book to enjoy and to pass the book on to a friend when they finish reading it.

AAUW member Judy Buck said on March 19 that about half the books she initially placed in the little free library have already been claimed by eager readers.

“I’m going to see about bringing some more over,” she said. “It’s been a good thing.”

Buck said the sharing of books is good for the coffee shop and the AAUW, and the little free library may be extended past the month of March.

She said when she first approached the Alcodray family, who own the business, about the AAUW setting up a free little library for Literacy Month, they suggested that if the concept is popular, they may continue it.

Buck suggested that the AAUW find a small, free-standing bookcase for the project, so the books aren’t permanently displacing retail shelf space.

The local AAUW continues to accept donations of used books for its annual sale through the Dearborn Ice Skating Center, 14900 Ford Road, on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. through the end of August.

For large donations of books, contact the AAUW at [email protected].

The group’s next book sale will take place Oct. 3 to 5 at the DISC.

The AAUW’s vintage book sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 29 at the Dearborn Historical Museum’s McFadden-Ross House, 915 S. Brady.

Proceeds from both book sales support the group’s higher education programs.
