DEARBORN — A 75-year-old Dearborn man crashed into multiple vehicles at the Outer Drive and Ford Road intersection the afternoon of March 16 when he accelerated to avoid being rear-ended by an approaching vehicle and then was unable to brake in time to avoid entering active traffic lanes.
The man said he was stopped in the northbound lane of Outer Drive at Ford Road when he saw a car approaching his vehicle from the rear. He said he accelerated to avoid being hit, but then he was unable to stop, and crashed into vehicles on eastbound and westbound Ford Road.
The man then turned south onto Outer Drive and struck a utility pole at the southwest corner of Ford Road and Outer Drive.
The driver admitted that he may have engaged the accelerator pedal instead of the brake. He declined medical attention on site.
First responders blocked off the area to avoid contact with live electrical wires.
The man was charged with reckless driving and with driving with a suspended or revoked license.
