HEIGHTS — A 26-year-old woman who has never left the state of Michigan reported May 24 that she received a letter from the Florida Department of Transportation claiming that she owed $17.75 for tolls associated with her vehicle’s license plate. Accompanying the letter was a photo of the plate on an unknown vehicle.

The woman said she was still in possession of her license plate, and she suspects that someone created a fake plate to avoid toll charges.

She said the Florida Department of Transportation has opened an investigation into the fraudulent activity.

The victim filed a police report to create a paper trail should she be subject to any more fraudulent charges.
