MELVINDALE – Police Cpl. Mohamed Said was remembered July 20 at the Civic Arena on the first anniversary of his death in the line of duty.

A memorial motorcycle ride and a community gathering at the Civic Arena marked Said’s passing.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Martinez thanked the Detroit Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and police officers from Inkster, River Rouge, Romulus and Westland for their participation.

City Council President Joe Jackson said it was moving that so many agencies came together to honor Said’s memory.

“It actually for at least a day brings people that were and are at each other’s necks together for the common cause of honoring Mo, a young man who paid the ultimate price with his life to protect his community,” he said.

City Councilmember Wheeler Marsee said he hopes Said rests in peace as people try to heal.

Police Chief Robert Kennaley, who recruited Said, said the young officer felt like a son to him.

He said Said’s memory makes for good and bad days among his fellow police officers, and that it is hard to believe that a year has passed since Said’s death.
